Assessing Prior Knowledge:
Students will have to know what the Civil War is pertaining to America and why the war started. They must know about the Union and what states were involved in the Union. I will have already discussed the Civil War in a previous lesson and before beginning this lesson I will ask open ended questions about their knowledge on the Civil War, and what they remember about the major events that took place. This information is important to know for my planning process because I need to remediate and enrich my lesson according to where each student is. I will either have to go back through the information or move forward with the lesson and begin talking upon the important events of the Civil War, focusing on why the South seceded from the Union for this particular lesson.
Planning Instruction: (Discuss the following for this lesson)
This content should be taught at this grade level because it is important for our students to know about the history of the United States. It is good for them to learn about the countries history in order to progress to the states history in 4th grade. The objectives align with the standard I chose because we discuss the issues that contributed to why the South seceded from the Union and the important events that contributed to it. This lesson would be taught midyear after we have discussed when Europeans started to come over to America, what happened after they came, the colonies, and laws that were incorporated in this time period.
