Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Subject(s): Social Studies

Topic of Study: Civil War

Time Allotment: 45 min (30 min for presentation)

Standards:
PO 1.  Recognize that there were issues (e.g., slavery, states’ rights, South seceded from the Union) associated with the Civil War.

Objectives: (What do you want the students to know or be able to do?, I will be looking carefully on how they align with your assessment)
Students will be able to discuss why the South seceded from the Union.

Reflect on:

Assessing Prior Knowledge:
Students will have to know what the Civil War is pertaining to America and why the war started. They must know about the Union and what states were involved in the Union. I will have already discussed the Civil War in a previous lesson and before beginning this lesson I will ask open ended questions about their knowledge on the Civil War, and what they remember about the major events that took place. This information is important to know for my planning process because I need to remediate and enrich my lesson according to where each student is. I will either have to go back through the information or move forward with the lesson and begin talking upon the important events of the Civil War, focusing on why the South seceded from the Union for this particular lesson.

Planning Instruction: (Discuss the following for this lesson)
This content should be taught at this grade level because it is important for our students to know about the history of the United States. It is good for them to learn about the countries history in order to progress to the states history in 4th grade. The objectives align with the standard I chose because we discuss the issues that contributed to why the South seceded from the Union and the important events that contributed to it. This lesson would be taught midyear after we have discussed when Europeans started to come over to America, what happened after they came, the colonies, and laws that were incorporated in this time period.

Meeting diverase needs of learners through learner-centered strategies and equitable access

It is important to meet the needs of every student in your class. This can be difficult when each need is diverse to each students' learning style, culture, and special needs. When you give students a learner-centered space, they can explore the different strategies that are available for them to use to learn the lesson. When you give students learner-centered activities you are providing them with the correct equitable access to these sites. Equitable access can refer to videos, websites, smart boards, pod casts, social media, anything that can be differentiated by learning strategies. It is so important to provide these services to your students because every student learns differently, and by providing them with different instructions, you are ensuring that every student is acquiring the right level of education for them.

Global awareness is the knowledge one holds about the different perspectives of cultures world wide. It is important to have global awareness when incorporating technology into the classroom because when you are online you have access to a global network of resources. Global awareness incorporates social, environmental, cultural, political, and economic relations around the world. It is important to show global awareness as a teacher to show your students the importance of having global awareness. When showing global awareness you are giving the rest of the digital world respect no matter where that person or site is in the world. It is important to be well educated in global issues because in the information technology age we are in it is vital to have an understanding of the issues other may face and their perspective on the topic.
Digital-age communication is how we communicate digitally. It is the era we are in that digital communication is a main way for communicating to one another. It is important to show how to communicate to one another via digital aids as a teacher because it allows for students to see the proper way it should be done. Having technology in the classroom is opening a door for you as a teacher to take the lead of direction for your students. there are many digitally communicative devises out there for your students to use educationally in the classroom, and it is important to practice these for your students. You can use technology to communicate to other student's world wide and if you do use these techniques it is important for your students to be globally aware in our digital age of communicating.
